  • Hunter Van der Burgt

    Hunter began sitting on horses before he was walking himself. He grew up a very competitive little athlete and started playing polo as soon as he could hold the mallet up when he was 7. Hunter played on the Open High School team and became the captain of his own team when he was 15. He got the opportunity to play for the Cornell High School polo team for his final high school year, winning himself 5 All-Star awards over the years. Hunter enjoys playing professionally, primarily out on the polo field. Beside winning numerous Best Playing Ponies. he also won Player of the Season at the Ocala Polo Club in 2023. He continues to help his parents train giving young Thoroughbreds a second career on the polo field. Hunter coaches and teaches new players and members. Hunter is a Certified USPA Umpire.

  • Phil and Tammy Van der Burgt

    Tammy began her career in polo when she was 23 at the Governor General Horse Guards polo club. In the early years of their relationship Phil would go to the club to watch Tammy play. Eventually he was convinced to give the sport a try and he fell in love. The two then traveled around the world playing polo professionally as well as began training world class polo ponies. In 2005 they started their own club north of Toronto called the Cedar Valley Polo Club. Here they raised their two children Hailey and Hunter along with building a large and loving polo family. In 2016 Phil and Tammy set their sights on the Niagara Region and began planning to move their family and club South. They began building their polo facility from the ground up in 2018 to then open for business in 2020. Now Phil and Tammy run the Plain Bay Polo Centre in Wainfleet, ON with their kids and continue to train horses as well as bring the sport of polo to the people of Niagara. They have now decided to expand and have begun the Florida Polo Club that they run with their son, Hunter. Phil and Tammy are both Certified USPA Umpires.

  • Marissa Wells

    Marissa comes from a family lineage of polo players. She’s been riding since she could walk and started playing polo at the age of 8, taught by her mom, Kelly Wells. At the age of 12, she became the captain of the Maryland Girl’s Interscholastic Polo team. She captained her team to 5 National Interscholastic championship finals winning 3 National Championships in 2012, 2014 & 2015. She made the Interscholastic all-star team every year from 2011 to 2015. She finished her high school polo career winning the PTF Female Interscholastic Player of the Year. Marissa went on to play Intercollegiate polo for Texas A&M University, where she was in the National Intercollegiate finals every year from 2016 to 2019. She captained the team to two National Championship titles in 2018 and 2019. She made the Intercollegiate all-star team every year from 2016 to 2019. She finished her college career winning the PTF Women’s Intercollegiate Player of the Year.

    She is a professional polo player and polo instructor. She is currently the highest rated women’s arena player in the country. Marissa continues to give back to the sport by teaching youth and adult players. She teaches USPA I/I polo clinics across the country. She also focuses on fitness and strength training for being a competitive athlete in polo.

  • Hailey Van der Burgt

    Hailey began her riding career before she could walk. She spent her early years riding in the hunter jumper arena before she began playing polo consistently. When she was 12 she started to take polo more seriously and spent a lot more time playing club polo with the other adults. When she was 14 she began playing polo professionally and playing as the captain on the clubs Girls High School polo team. She played in the Interscholastic Division for 8 years, winning five All-Star awards during her high school polo career. After high school she had the opportunity to become the captain of Team Canada and traveled to India representing Canada in women’s polo. Hailey continues to play professionally, as well as has a hand in the family horse training business. She is also the primary instructor for students under the age of 16, and assists in coaching the Intercollegiate teams. In 2019 Hailey also founded the Canadian Women’s Polo Series, in an effort to improve and grow the sport for women in the country. Hailey is a Certified USPA Umpire.

  • Jeff Leggett

    Jeff grew up around horses with his grandfather raising perchron draft horses. Later spending many years with his daughters showing western pleasure horses. He has been team roping in the APRA, IPRA professional rodeo circuits for 30+ yrs. He now ropes with his son Connor in the same circuits and The USTRC. Also likes to get the horses out as much as possible trail riding with his wife Kelly and family. He is also a certified farrier for more than 30 years.

  • Connor Leggett

    Connor grew up in Vermont where he learned to ride and rope on a bay pony named Midnight. As he got older he began juggling his time between horses, hockey and lacrosse. After a couple years of public school, he transferred to Cushing Academy, a boarding school in MA, to pursue hockey and lacrosse at a more competitive level. Connor took a break from the horses as hockey became his passion and priority. He eventually went to the University of New England (UNE) where he played varsity DIII lacrosse for all four years of undergraduate and met his wife, Melissa. He finished college with a bachelors in business administration and a minor in economics. After college, Connor began working for his family’s construction company, Leggett Custom Homes, Inc. He spent a few years roping in the APRA and IPRA with his father Jeff. They then expanded the company to FL and Connor passed the state exams to attain a Certified FL Residential Contractors License. Now he mostly ropes in USTRC ropings and jackpots. Connor also enjoys getting out with the family for trail riding.

  • Melissa Leggett

    Melissa grew up in Chicago playing ice hockey since she was 5 years old. She played varsity DIII ice hockey throughout her four undergraduate years at the University of New England (UNE) where she met her husband, Connor, her freshman year. This was when Melissa was first introduced to horses. She graduated from UNE with a bachelors in Athletic Training. She then went on to receive her masters in nursing from Marquette University and family nurse practitioner from Bradley University. Melissa currently practices as an orthopaedic nurse practitioner. She is passionate helping people return to being active and doing the things they love. She has been learning how to ride horses since meeting Connor and mostly enjoys trail riding. She also has been learning to rope off the ground and on an old rope horse.
